Free Terraria (tModLoader) dedicated server on your own PC

Host a modded Terraria world on hardware you already own. NodeMesh downloads tModLoader, keeps the server running and relays your friends' connections, so there is nothing to open on your router. We ran it on a real Linux PC; a real player joining through the relay is still on our list, so it stays Beta.

Free on your own PC — one host, no time limit.

How it works on your PC

1

Install the agent

Sign up, then paste one command from your dashboard on the PC that will run the server — PowerShell on Windows, a terminal on Linux. The agent installs as a service and pairs with your account.

2

Pick the game

Choose the game in the panel. NodeMesh downloads the dedicated server, sets it up and starts it, and you watch every step in the live console.

3

Share the address

Switch on the traffic relay for the server and the panel gives you a public address. Send it to your friends: their traffic goes through the relay to your PC, so you never open a port on your router.

What your PC needs

Memory for the server (minimum)2 GB
Memory for the server (recommended)4 GB
WindowsSupported (newer, in beta)
LinuxSupported

The memory figures are for the game server alone. If you also play on the same PC, the game itself needs its own memory on top.

Friends join without port forwarding

tModLoader uses TCP on port 7777 by default. The relay forwards it to your PC, so you make no changes to your router. Players need tModLoader with the same mods. In the game, choose Multiplayer, then Join via IP, and enter the address the panel gives you.

Mods

Add mods on the Mods tab by uploading a .tmod file or by pasting a Steam Workshop link or ID. NodeMesh puts the file where tModLoader looks for it. You can disable a mod without deleting it and switch it back on later, or remove it for good; changes apply on the next start. We did each of these on a real Linux PC, including a mod from the Workshop.

What is free

One host — your own PC — is free with no time limit, for up to 5 game servers: the web panel and console, the config editor, the mod manager, auto-restart on crash and the traffic relay. Extra hosts cost credits.

Beta: this game runs on NodeMesh today, but our full hardware test of it is not finished yet. We would rather say so than call it stable.

Questions

Do I have to buy Terraria again for the server?

The server software is free and NodeMesh downloads it for you, with no Steam login stored on your PC. Your friends still need Terraria, and tModLoader, to play.

What is the difference from the plain Terraria server?

tModLoader is a mod loader for Terraria with its own server. Pick it when you want mods; the plain Terraria server does not take mods.

Does it run on Windows?

Linux is the host we have run it on. Windows hosts are in beta: we found and fixed a problem there, but have not run the fix on hardware yet.

Can I change the world and the server settings?

Yes. The Config tab covers the player limit, password, message of the day, world name, seed and difficulty. We saved nine of these settings on a real Linux PC and read them back from the server's config file.

Is it really free?

Yes, for one host. Running game servers on your own PC is free with no time limit — up to 5 servers, traffic relay included. You only pay, in credits, if you add more hosts.
